Getting your little one to sleep is far from easy, the slightest thing can disturb your baby’s sleeping patterns and make it impossible to settle them down for the rest of the evening.
Training
This may not seem like the most feasible task, but training your baby to sleep can have a great impact on their future sleeping patterns. The sooner you start to establish some form of a sleeping pattern with your newborn, the better it will be for you and your tot in the long run.
Calming noises
It sounds counter-intuitive but loud and calming noises, can actually settle your baby down for the night, especially with newborns. The closest you can get your “ssshs” to sound like white noise, the better. The white noises will remind your baby of life inside the womb because before your tot was born they were used to hearing loud blurring sounds. So, for your newborn to be in a silent room is not only strange, but can also make it harder for them to settle down.
Change noise routine
The downside to calming noises is your tot will become too reliant on them. Like many things with your baby, you will have to wean them away eventually. But for the first year it’s okay to use white noise to settle them down.
Wake your baby
Not the most popular tip, especially when it has taken you ages to get your baby to sleep in the first place. But it has been proven that waking your little one just as they’re about to drift off to sleep can really help your tot establish a sleeping pattern. It may be difficult at the beginning, but it will prove more effective in the long run.
Don’t compromise your schedule
While in an ideal world we would like to work around our baby’s napping regime, it’s just not practical. So, if your little one falls asleep in the stroller or in your arms, it’s not the worst thing that can happen to your tot’s sleeping patterns. There’s nothing wrong with trying to plan a routine around your little one’s crazy sleeping patterns, but remember it's okay if your little one has a few irregular naps here or there.
