Reading together with your child is one of the most important things you can do to help their education:
- Aim to spend at least ten happy minutes every day reading aloud together.
- Read at least three stories a day to your child. It doesn’t matter if you read the same story over and over again.
- Be animated while you read to your child, put on silly voices and just have fun!
- Read with excitement: Be happy to be sharing the time together.
- Expose your child to lots of language, sing songs, repeat nursery rhymes, and talk together about the pictures or anything about the books.
- For young children, pick short books that have lots of rhyme, rhythm and repetition.
- Play games together about things that you and your child can see in the book such as finding the letters that spell your child’s name.
- Never turn reading into a chore or get annoyed with your child about reading.Above all, just enjoy the time you are spending with your child.
