We rely on our teachers to act as guardians as well as educators when we wave goodbye at the school gate, and this woman recently went above and beyond to fulfil her duty.

A US kindergarten teacher has been honoured by local authorities after she thwarted a child abduction at her school last week.

Ginger Taylor intervened when she saw a man – believed by authorities to be a non-custodial father – snatching a five-year-old boy from the playground of Westside Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia.

Taylor stepped in and tried to stop the man and a companion from taking the child, but was pushed aside by them. The teacher then proceeded to contact the school’s resource officer immediately, who called a ‘be on the look-out’ alert.

Shortly after, the suspects were apprehended while driving to the local airport, where a rented plane was on standby to transport them and the young child to Mississippi.

The child was later returned to his mother, while Taylor was honoured and given a standing ovation by the local police force and education board.

Explaining how instrumental Taylor was in catching the suspects, a police officer said: “She gave us the description of the car, we knew what the driver looked like, we knew the tag number, and that’s very unusual to have all that information.”

“Within 15 minutes, we had him cuffed and the child in custody,” he added.

Well done to this teacher. We can’t imagine how relieved the child’s family is.
